United plane's evacuation slide deploys mid-flight

CHICAGO (AP) — An evacuation slide inflated inside a United Airlines plane as it flew from Chicago to California, filling part of the cabin and forcing the pilot to make an emergency landing in Kansas, the airline and passengers said.

Mike Schroeder said he was flying to Orange County, California, late Sunday when he heard a hiss and pop. Schroeder said he turned around and saw the plane's evacuation slide — which would normally go outside the plane during an emergency — inflating inside the cabin.

United Airlines officials said in a statement Monday that no one aboard Flight 1463 was injured.

Passengers remained calm and took pictures of the inflated slide with their phones, Schroeder said. The Boeing 737-700 pilot announced to passengers that they would be landing at Wichita's Mid-Continent Airport.

"When the pilot came out right after landing he said, 'Oh golly, I've never seen that before,'" Schroeder said.

Christen David, a spokeswoman for the Chicago-based airline, said the slide "accidentally deployed" and that all 96 passengers were seated when the slide inflated. The airline provided passengers hotel rooms and planned a flight Monday morning from Wichita to California.

United's maintenance team will inspect the aircraft to find out what happened, David said.

Elizabeth Cory, a spokeswoman for the Federal Aviation Administration, said agency investigators were at the scene in Wichita, but that the investigation would take weeks. She did not have further information.

' Naked rambler ' of the United Kingdom again arrested for nudity,

London (AP) — A British man who has spent most of the past decade — and nude in prison — was back behind bars Friday after they defied an order to cover.

Stephen Gough, known as the "Naked Rambler", was arrested Thursday as he left a court in Southampton, southern England, wearing only stockings, boots and a backpack.

A judge had imposed only an order that must "wear enough in public to cover at least his genitals and buttocks."

The 54-year-old former Royal Marine appeared at the same Court Friday and was ordered held until a hearing on March 25.

Since 2003 Gough has completed two nudes walk the length of Britain, with frequent interruptions for arrests, court appearances and jail.

Lawyer accuses Roger Trencher said Friday that Gough "caused much offense nationally and has used a considerable amount of police time in England, Wales and Scotland."

Gough said he believes nudity is a human right. Defense lawyer Jeffrey Norie-Mille told the Court that Gough "believes it is his right to not wear clothes and go about its normal business in such a State of undress."

There is no law in Britain against public nudity. However, there are laws against indecent exposure or behavior likely to cause "harassment, alarm or distress."

Gough served longer sentences to appear naked in public places, including courts and an airplane.

He could face up to five years in prison for violating the no-nudity, known as an antisocial behaviour order.

United States FAA looking into high security Harlem Shake Dance

NEW YORK (Reuters)-a sky-high Harlem Shake video that went viral on YouTube the Internet dance craze has caught the attention of officials of the United States that aviation said Friday they are seeking in the event over safety concerns.

In the video, called "Harlem Shake Frontier flight 157," ultimate Frisbee team members from Colorado College and other passengers are shown frantically dancing in the aisles and seating opposite last month on Frontier Airlines flight packed from Colorado Springs to San Diego, California.

"If we find any evidence of a violation of Federal Aviation Regulations, then it would be pursuing it," FAA spokesman Allen Kenitzer said in an e-mail.

The song-and-dance craze typically starts with a dancer who has quickly joined by others, some of whom are in costume.

Frontier Airlines has defended its decision to allow college students to dance aboard the flying thousands of feet above the Grand Canyon in Arizona.

"We have a policy of not commenting on things that are under investigation by the FAA, but I can tell you that all security measures were followed and the seat belt sign was off," Frontier Airlines spokeswoman Kate O'Malley said in an e-mail.

Frontier crew members had recorded their own version of the dance a few weeks before, although on more solid ground within an air terminal.

College students, said he had come up with the idea a couple of days before flight. They had asked permission before starting the dance crew and were shown how to use the public address system.

"When we arrived at the airport we were kind of prepared and brought costumes and stuff," Matt Zelin, a sophomore in college, said the College's newspaper, the catalyst.

"Obviously I hope that this whole situation is resolved with the FAA ..." added Zelin. "I don't see there being no reason why this should cause no problem. We asked the staff and they said it was safe.
